Final Project - Supreme Court

Day One (July 26, 2010)

Final Project Thoughts

What interested me the most about the supreme court was I felt I learned and know the least about it. I still have many questions about it.
Questions:
-What can the sc do to limit the other branches power and vice-versa?
-What was the conclusion of the Marbury Vs. Madison case?
-What are the most major decisions made by the sc? Did they shape the way our country works?
Topic/ Project Ideas:
Technology I Liked Using:
-Voice thread
-Slide show
-Wordle

Day Two (July 27, 2010) - Field Trip To Moakley Court House

These are photos of six of the seven entrances at the Moakley courthouse that are open to the populous. An interesting fact about the Moakley Court House is that it is completely open to the public and was even designed to welcome them in. I thought it was amazing that we were just able to walk into an ongoing trail without questioning.

This image is the yet another public entrance. It is specially designed facing the Boston Harbor to represent that we common people are welcomed in at anytime. Also, if you are standing right in in front of this entrance you are able to view the entrances to each of the 27 court rooms which also tells us that the court house isn't meant to be hidden from the public.

Some very interesting facts that we learned about during the tour was about the design (architectural as well as the art) that went into this amazing court house it that the artist that is chosen to have their artwork displayed for the public eye is the fact that they receive half of 1% of the cost of the building. In this case it is a major controversy because being that this is a very expensive building ($163 million) the artist of the 13 panel artwork, Ellsworth Kelly, received $800,000.

Day Three (July 28, 2010) - Finalizing the Project

Final Project Topic
-Podcast
-Roe vs Wade

We decided to do mock debate using supreme court judges etc. as if they were on a talk show about the Roe vs. Wade case.

About My Role:

My role in the debate was just to be a typical citizen. My partners played the roles of supreme court justices that have very different political ideologies and displayed them in our mock debate. In the skit I was took a balanced role and took a stance in between the justices extremes and acted as mediator.

This link was the best link that I found. It was important to our project giving us lots of useful information and arguments for our script.

One resource we used in our project is pirate pad. We implemented this technology so we could work together and collectively make the script and our roles. Pirate pad helped us in making our script because it allowed us to write with more fluency and to share ideas with each other since our work was on the same link which was very convenient and efficient for us.

The case we are debating:

Roe Vs. Wade

Argued on December 13, 1971
Reargued October 11, 1972
Decided January 22, 1973

Project Reflection

The podcast/slideshow as well as the other tools we used to vreate the project were very entertaining. I enjoyed creating the video and liked the fact that I could work on it at home instead of just being limited here. Some things that I learned doing this project are that not all judges and justices have the same opinion or will agree on the same thing. Some factors that determine this is if their conservative or liberal and what type of party they are in (i.e. Republican or Democratic). However, having different opinions makes everything more fair for the people involved in the case so that most of the views are seen.
